On hot summer nights, many of us struggle to get a good night’s sleep. One common dilemma constantly pops up: “Should I leave the air conditioner running all night, or set a timer so it turns off?”
Worried about high electricity bills or waking up with a cold, many people choose to set a timer for 1 or 2 hours.
However, what do sleep experts and doctors actually recommend? Here is the surprising truth!
It might come as a surprise, but experts actually recommend keeping the AC on throughout the night at a moderate temperature during heatwaves.
If you set your AC timer for 1 or 2 hours, the room temperature rises again once it shuts off. Even if you don’t fully wake up, your body experiences “micro-arousals” as your brain reacts to the temperature change. This prevents you from reaching deep sleep, leaving you feeling exhausted the next morning.
To fall and stay in a deep sleep, your core body temperature needs to drop by about 0.5°C to 1°C (1–2°F). On sweltering summer nights where ambient temperatures stay high, it’s nearly impossible for your body to cool down naturally without air conditioning.
Leaving the AC on all night doesn’t mean blasting it at freezing temperatures (like 18°C / 64°F)! To prevent catching a chill or waking up with a stiff neck, follow these 3 essential rules:
Set the temperature 1–2°C higher than your daytime preference.
Because your metabolic rate drops while sleeping, standard daytime cooling temperatures will feel too cold by dawn.
Take advantage of your AC unit’s [Sleep Mode] or [Night Mode]. This feature automatically increases the temperature slightly over time to prevent you from getting chilly.
Keep the fan speed on Low or Quiet.
Direct cold air blowing on bare skin drops body temperature too quickly and causes muscle tightness, dry throat, or morning stiffness.
Angle the AC louvers upward or toward the wall.
Most modern air conditioners use Inverter technology.
Inverter ACs maintain a set temperature (e.g., 26°C / 78°F) by running the compressor at minimal power once the target temperature is reached. Turning the AC off and on repeatedly actually consumes more electricity because the unit works at maximum power every time it has to cool down a warm room again.
Therefore, keeping it running continuously at a higher, comfortable setting is both better for your health and more energy-efficient!
Set your AC to 26°C–27°C (78°F–80°F).
Direct the airflow upward, away from your bed.
Use a fan on low speed directed at a wall to circulate the cool air.
Keep a light blanket over your chest/belly to stay comfortable.
